Book Review: Before the Coffee Gets Cold and Before the Coffee Gets Cold Tales from the Cafe

Author: Toshikazu Kawaguchi
Ratings: 9/10

The books are a compilation of heartwarming stories. These are tales from the customers of Cafe Funiculi Funicula, a 100-year-old café that would let its customers travel to the past, or is it just to the past? The gist, they should come back before their coffee gets cold.

I love how even short the books are (around 200 pages) all the characters are well developed. And we are talking about more than 5 people per book here. The setting is just the café but it seems like there are so many places you have been to.

The whole story is magical without the laboriousness of a magical world. It is even a present setting and everyone knows what the café can do/offer to its patron.

I read the second book in one sitting (4.5 hours). It consists of touching narratives of people who still wanted to go back to the past. I love the intertwined chronicles of the customers. Here, the café was given a more detailed description. It is telling us more about the main characters which are the owner/s and staff and their story plus it deepens the secrets of the café.

It’s been a while that I had a good cry reading a book and this is one of those books that will surely touch your heart.

Going to the past or future would not change a thing even if how hard you try. But, is it really that way?

Also, there is a 2018 movie adaptation of the book titled “Cafe Funiculi Funicula” you’re welcome 🙂
