Of Memories and Trying New at Dong Juan

Babe and I love food and we both love to eat but we are not food adventurists. We are not choosy either, we ate whatever given and provided to us. But, if given a choice we like to eat at places we know and comfortable with. There are a handful of restaurants and food that we ate on a daily basis and during special occasions.

But, there are rare times (recently always hahaha) when I initiate to eat somewhere new. Most of the time these places are recommended by foodie friends or I merely come across a food review blog or SMM post.

Last June 19, 2021, I asked babe if we could eat at Dong Juan, a restaurant near our place and that keeps a good yet sad memory in my heart.

Dong Juan Cebu City

February 2012, the first and only time (before today) that I visited Dong Juan. It is a bittersweet visit. The foods are really good, we are having fun and at the same time the idea of my dear Ella going overseas to work as a nurse is sinking in. It is her Despedida.

I may only have one sibling but it felt like I have 4 and I am their ate. Ella and Maitha are my super close elder cousin – ate Maridel’s beautiful daughter and since we are at the same age range and grew up closely the four of us together with my younger sister Geenez felt like sisters.

The idea of Ella living a thousand miles away is melancholic. I know that we will have our own lives and living with our own family but never did I imagine the four of us living a continent apart. We even have plans of living in one building together, just 1 concrete wall apart.

As we grow we need to take some paths we didn’t think we are going to take. The path we believe is best for our future. Whatever road that might be, what matters the most is we do not forget the people we left behind, the people that matter. Thank you to social media, I have constant communication with my sibs Ella, Maitha, and Geenez (hello group chat).

Back at Dong Juan, babe and I enjoyed the food that we had. I ordered the food we ordered during Ella’s Despedida. Burger Steak and Back Ribs plus chicken nuggets that I have been craving. The burger steak as delicious and juicy as before, the back ribs as tasty and tender, and the chicken nuggets that surprisingly babe exclaimed the best chicken nuggets he ever had.

We have the place all by our self, we visited around 2:00 pm Saturday so we have savored the ambiance of the charming restaurant. Its clean white walls decorated with fine-looking paintings and warm light adds a touch of luxury to the place. While waiting for our food (15 minutes) I narrate to babe about Ella’s Despedida and more childhood stories.
